The self-experimental project Method Fund was established by artists, curators, art critics, architects, and educators in Kiev in 2015 to investigate forms of art institutions that would meet the requirements of the present, respond to the peculiarities of the local context, and transfer knowledge from this environment. Captivation. Statement is based on methods, ideas and educational practices developed by Method Fund members and curators Lada Nakonechna and Kateryna Badianova within the framework of an open school educational program called Course of Art. Referencing the pedagogical display apparatus of a blackboard, the installation presents a vision of the role of art education. Particular attention is given therein to the concepts of captivation, repetition, contextualization (the idea of ‘contextual art’ by Ukrainian artist Miroslav Kulchitsky), and cultural situation (a strategy developed by Slovak artist Július Koller). Simultaneously rethinking historical artistic experiences and examining their present-day locality, Method Fund appropriates and re-actualizes relevant artistic instruments of poly-contextual work to create an image of the culture in which they are situated, while at the same time operating from a critical distance.
